AI Policy

How we use it, how we don't, and what we ask of you.

AI is everywhere right now, and with it comes a lot of questions about what it's actually doing inside the design and strategy work you're investing in. We want to be straightforward about where it fits into our process at Katlyn Slocum Design, and where it doesn't.

What we can tell you is this: every project we take on is human-led, strategy-driven, and built around your specific business. AI doesn't replace the thinking, expertise, or craft that go into what we deliver. It supports the process in very specific, intentional ways, and we're going to tell you exactly what those are.

How We Use (and Don’t Use) AI

Where AI has a role in our process

Research and ideation

We occasionally use AI as a research and brainstorming tool, similar to how we might use Google or Pinterest to explore ideas during the discovery and strategy phases of a project. It helps us move through inspiration-gathering and competitive landscape work more efficiently so we can spend more of our time where it matters: thinking strategically about your business.

Coding and technical problem-solving

Squarespace has layers. When we run into a complex technical challenge during development, we may use AI to help troubleshoot or write specific code. The decisions behind how your site is built, structured, and optimized are always ours.

Refining communications

We occasionally use AI to review and tighten written content after we've drafted it ourselves. The thinking, the strategy, and the substance are always written by us first. AI is a second set of eyes, not a ghostwriter.

What you can count on us never to do

We do not use AI to design your brand, build your website strategy, write your copy, or make decisions about how your business should be positioned. The strategic, creative, and advisory work you're investing in is ours — shaped by years of working exclusively with custom home builders and the expertise that comes with that depth of focus.

Your brand and your business deserve original thinking. That is what we show up to deliver.

What We Ask of You

This is where we want to be direct with you, because it genuinely affects the quality of what we build together.

AI can be a useful tool. It can also quietly work against your brand if it's used in the wrong places during our process. The reason is simple: the most valuable thing you bring to this project is your voice, your perspective, and the specific knowledge of your business that no AI model has access to. When AI fills in for that, what we end up with is generic. And generic is the exact opposite of what we're building.

Go ahead and use AI for:

  • Brainstorming business goals, project directions, or content ideas before we kick off

  • Researching your ideal client or getting familiar with messaging frameworks like StoryBrand

  • Summarizing notes from calls or meetings for your own reference

Please don't use AI for:

  • Answering our intake questionnaires or strategy forms — we ask those questions because your answers shape the entire direction of your project. Generic responses produce a generic strategy. We need to hear from you.

  • Writing the copy we'll be working from — if you've been brought on for copywriting support, that work should reflect your actual voice, values, and client experience. AI-generated copy lacks the specificity that makes your brand credible to the exact clients you're trying to attract.

  • Giving feedback on design concepts — AI doesn't understand the strategic decisions behind what we've presented, and its feedback will often push back on choices that were made intentionally. Trust your instincts. Your honest reaction is what we need.

At the end of the day, we're building something that reflects who you are as a builder and what your business stands for. That work requires your real input. We'll handle the strategy, the design, and the expertise — but the foundation has to be you.

If you ever have questions about how AI is or isn't being used at any point in your project, just ask. We're always happy to walk you through our process.
